Surveillance and Optimization – Oil & Gas Industry Standards and Framework for Evaluating Future I/O
Abstract:
Metrics form the basis for the management and optimization of oilfield operational processes. These encompass standards of measurement by which efficiency, performance, progress, or quality of a plan, process, or product can be assessed. Recent technological advances in sensors and the integration of software, algorithm coding, microprocessors, remote telemetry, and human machine interface (HMI) capabilities are resulting in an array of innovative options for oil & gas operators to evaluate. Means to develop future standardization of regional and global requirements specific to oil & gas production artificial lift control processes are appraised, together with a framework for cooperation between service providers and end users.
Completed February 2011, and available.
• Assessing Production Control System Security - Are your key assets at risk?
Abstract:
This paper explores the threat of intrusive software coding and sabotage. Insights into cyber security requirements specific to hacking oilfield production control systems are provided. Investment in a common security language - harmonization- is assessed. Sensors, remote communications, and the integration of production optimization and reliablity algorithms are being quickly bundled and sold by oilfield service manufacturers, often utilizing third party technologies and software coding. But what safeguards and inspections are being made? And to what standard? The incentive payback of such technologies can be lucrative to operators, through savings in operating expenditures by way of increased efficiencies and reliability, together with improved production processes integrated within the software controls. But is enough attention and investment being made to potential benign attacks to the very core of production controls? What types of operating and financial effects would a catastrophic attack on enterprise production controls incur? What is the status quo of industry standards for prevention?
